Connection: Clients Whose Access to Sensations and Feelings is Compromised

Dr. Laurence Heller with Brad Kammer

Friday June 30 10 am -12:30 pm PST; 1-3:30 pm EST; 7-9:30 pm mainland Europe

This special online training webinar will focus on working with clients who have great difficulty accessing their internal states; namely, their sensations, feelings and emotions.  How do we work effectively with clients who do not have access to their bodies or emotional feelings?  From the very beginning this creates significant challenges for therapists in providing effective treatment.  In this webinar you will be introduced to the NARM protocol for working with such clients.

In helping to conceptualize this clinical approach, we will present four general patterns for clients who experience difficulty in accessing their internal states, and how to work with each one of these four patterns:

  • Clients who cannot access their internal states (i.e., body sensations, emotions)
  • Clients who experience their internal states with dread (e.g., hypochondria)
  • Clients who experience their internal states as painful, and for whom the last thing they want to do in therapy is go into them
  • Clients for whom any positive experience is rapidly overcoupled with distress
